The project in question concerned an existing cottage that had been in the clients family for a number of generations and the desire to renovate it
while at the same time adding a contemporary addition to it. The site is bordered directly to the south by a small stream and the living spaces in the project are all orientated towards this to take advantage of the views and the natural light.
The design intent was to create two distinct volumes on the site: Live and Rest with the living spaces formed by the old cottage and a new annex and the sleeping quarters in a long block to the rear. Both are connected by the "bridge" which also serves as the entrance hall.
The old cottage required some demolition work due to structural issues and the internal was entirely gutted. The original design had proposed replacing the existing render but during the construction process we discovered very good quality stonework underneath and decided that given this style was part of the local vernacular it would enhance the composition considerably to retain it. The other materials have been chosen to express the different volumes accordingly and provide a balance and contrast; timber, brick and stone.
A number of trees needed to be removed and the rear of the site is heaving wooded. As a nod to this, the rear projecting brick columns have been sited to mirror the locations of trees removed as well as those still existing and to create a gentle symmetry between the new of the old block and the existing natural surroundings.
The project is still currently under construction.
